Israel to Iran: "Iran Must Start To Fear"

Oh man, should I go ahead and put my popcorn in the microwave? I think the show is about to begin because Ehud Olmert is pissed and he's openly threatening Iran,
"President (Mahmoud) Ahmadinejad is a man who is ready to commit crimes against humanity, and he has to be stopped."
"But I don't believe that Iran will accept such compromise unless they have good reason to fear the consequences of not reaching a compromise."In other words, Iran must start to fear."
Wow them's fightin words and Iran's foreign ministry spokesman has a response,
"Israel does not have the means and the capability to dare threaten Iran... if it commits such a stupidity the Islamic republic and its defenders will give a destructive response within a second," Hosseini said Sunday.
Either that's a Hezbollah style threat* or an admission of having the weapons they've denied having.

Let me spell this out for everyone. Olmert made these statements on the eve of a five day summit in the U.S. where he will of course meet with George W. He wants us to give Iran something to "fear" and I'm sure he wouldn't mind if we actually put troops on the ground. You don't need me to tell you that's completely out of the question, we have our own problems to deal with and its about time the U.S. starts covering its own ass. My recommendation to Olmert...SAVE YOUR OWN ASS! Stop calling on your big brother to resolve your fights.

Seriously what a colossal coward Olmert is, he threatens Iran suggesting he will give them something to fear and then runs to the U.S. for protection. Could someone remind me why we protect Israel again, are they sitting on top of some huge oil reserve? I thought we were capitalists, could someone please tell me what's in it for us? Anyways I have to go, my popcorn is ready, enjoy the show!

*Hezbollah style threat- when you threaten to use weapons you don't have, subsequently getting your ass kicked.

I do not think that it was Israel which started threatening Iran. So why should Israel not call for its allies? If a country is best wiped off the map, don't you think aggressive, verbal reaction is rather 'normal'?

db, i think you're off base on this one.
first of all, as eropia says.. they(iran) started it. (very 2nd gradelike)

secondly, we NEED Israel. not for oil, but because they are our only true ally in the region.

Finally, if it comes down to it, i think Israel could kick the crap out of iran all by themselves. I don't know if Iran has weapon capable nukes, but i'd bet anything that Israel does.

I know what your saying, Europia and Rhino. I know Ahmedijad says some crazy stuff like Israel shouldnt exist etc. However I think there is a difference between saying you dont think the state of israel should exist and saying "I will wipe it off the map" if the latter was said the world would have taken action a long time ago.

2nd who cares if we have an ally in the mid east or not, are we collecting friends now, is this like international Myspace. If we (the u.s.) would cover our own ass we wouldnt need an ally there.

3rd Do you think Israel has ever been by themselves? Take away the 2 billion dollars in aid, Sale of Israeli bonds in the U.S. and overlapping U.S. and U.N. legislation and you would have an Israel all by herself. The U.S. acknowledges that Israel would not fair well by itself duh, its why we have this little partnership going.

Listen I'm not blamming anyone, Israel or Iran, frankly I dont care, they can blow each other up. However I'm an American and I'm getting pretty tired of being the worlds enemy over that little country called Israel that always comes running to its bigger brother for help. Let us be very realistic, we want an ally in the mid east thats fine but I think we would have many allies in the Mid East if we didnt favor Israel so much on issues that no one in the entire world supports except for the U.S. You know kind of how it was in the 70's when we were friends to Israel and Egypt and the Egyptian people trusted America too.

db, i understand what you're saying. As an American i don't want to always be the world police either.
However, Israel, for all of their faults has always been and will always be a staunch ally. We NEED that ally in that area. They may need us more than we need them, but we still need them. We can count on their help and cooperation because they have NO choice! Turkey is a perfect example.

When we were preparing to invade Iraq we went to Turkey and asked them if we could stage some of the air strikes from their country. they said no. they are an ally, BUT, they are predominantly muslim and so when they took a vote (democracy)they voted no. Fair enough, i read an op-ed in the wall street journal written by the turkish president who made his point very clearly and i have no problem with what they did, however we need and ally there.

We can't guarantee that Egypt would back us up against Iran can we? How about Turkey? Or any other muslim country? Could we have counted on Egypt to let us stage an invasion of Iraq in the 70's? probably not, especially after the way we (carter) treated the shah of Iran when he needed us most. If i was Egypt or any other muslim country i wouldn't trust the U.S. either, but that's a discussion for another day.

Well, we in the West are tired of the Muslim world from Indonesia to Pakistan bleating about Israel all the time and ignoring the real danger to Muslims, themselves. If crazed leaders of Muslims countries would stop saying that Israel should not exist, the US could stop having to defend it's ally, the only truly democratic country that allows Arabs to serve in government and has real defense lawyers to defend political prisoners and doesn't stick sticks in peoples asses, like in the US and Egypt. Israel is a far, far better country than any Arab country in existance, despite having to constantly oppress, and yet defend, the rights of those that would destroy it. Iran is oppressing women by the millions. No one seems to give a rat's ass about it. Screw the Palestinians who also oppress women and each other. When Muslims start valuing their own lives and the lives of others, then maybe we in the West will value them as well. Besides since they are all martyrs aren't they better off in heaven according to Muslim beliefs? Aren't they dying in the holy war? Who cares if thousands of Muslims are slaughtered by Israel and sectarian vilence and for being Israel/US collaboraters etc, when they get to go to heaven? As for the Palestinians, they look like a bunch of ignorant, redneck inbreds to me. Hillbillies from Hell's village. Their woman are ugly, ugly, ugly or maybe its just the scarves and the evil expressions. I just remember them dancing in the streets on 9/11. By all rights I should be dancing in the streets when I see the coverage of Israeli attacks in Gaza.

miss c your ability to excessively generalize and marginalize whole groups of people based on lil snippits and headlines you read without any tangible grasp of even 1/16th of the issue, never fails to ammaze me. I certainly dont mind differing opinions but would you mind doing a spec of research before you make outrageous generalizations. Your comment today finally crossed the line between generalization and bigotry.

I write because I want to bring light to issues of the middle east and make it a better place by challanging ignorance and misconceptions between the Middle East and the West. You seem to write out of pure hate for Arabs and Muslims, correct me if i'm wrong.

Donkey-Absolutely there have been plenty of issues between muslims and christians prior to Israels existence...agreed but Palestinians werent a cause or a needy people prior to 1948. I always thought they were but i recently saw pictures of Palestine before 1948 which really really surprised me, it reminded me of Cuba before Castro, you know palm tree lined streets women in fancy dresses, men in three piece suits.

d.b., you should have seen the pictures of Israel before the Jews arrived in the 1800's!

Mark Twain described it as a "desolate wasteland where you can walk 10 miles without seeing 10 people".

Let's face it. If the Jews didn't purchase the land, drain the swamps, kill the malaria, and turn desearts into cities, it would still be a desolate wasteland and no one would care about it.

Anon-It's interesting that you say that, the suggestion that Jews came to Palestine and accomplished the miracle of making the desert bloom.

Yes I've heard it before, the most interesting item is the fact that this theory was first posed as historical fact by Joan Peters in the book, "From Time Immortal: The Origins of the Arab-Jewish Conflict Over Palestine". The book was very successful, a national best seller that went through 7 hardback printings. You however ignored the fact that the book and nearly all of its data including the falacy of the miraculous desert bloom was proven to be falsified, a colossal hoax actually. Wow who knew that Shobrawy reads books!?
